Fitness bands - The Swiss Army knife of every trainer

Fitness bands - The Swiss Army knife of every trainer

Elastic fitness bands have long been faithful companions of trainers and therapists.

The use of elastic fitness bands in fitness training and therapy has many advantages:

  • They are versatile and suitable for different types of exercises. They can be used for resistance training, flexibility exercises and for speed and coordination training.
  • They are easy to transport, they do not take up much space and can be easily stored at home or in the studio/practice.
  • They are easy on the joints and reduce the risk of injury.
  • Depending on the training stimulus, regular use of fitness bands helps to build muscle mass, increase general strength or even improve speed.
  • Elastic fitness bands optimally support mobility and agility exercises, which can increase flexibility and mobility. Muscle tension can be reduced and injuries can be prevented.

Overall, elastic fitness bands are a simple and effective tool and there is nothing that speaks against the use of fitness bands.

What are the different types of fitness bands and for which exercise, workout or body part is each one better suited?

Minibands or Loopbands

Minibands are mainly used for training the legs, glutes, abductors and shoulder girdle, as well as for athletic movements, for GroupFitness classes, but also in therapy. They are often used by physiotherapists for the rehabilitation of shoulder problems as they provide excellent resistance for the rotator cuff or other stabilising muscles in a controlled range of motion.

Powerbands or Superbands

Powerbands are used for upper, lower and full body exercises and offer a wide variety of uses. They help to increase functional strength and muscle endurance or to train explosive movements. They are also great for stretching or improving flexibility and range of motion. They are a classic functional training tool and accordingly also popular in athletic training.

Therabands or Flexbands

Therabands or flexbands are often used for rehabilitation exercises to help patients after injury or surgery. They provide gentle resistance that can help restore strength and flexibility in injured muscles and joints.

Therabands or flexbands are also often used in Pilates and yoga classes to increase resistance in traditional exercises. They can help to increase the challenge of the exercises and target specific muscle groups more specifically.

Maxibands and resistbands

In recent years, the variety of variations of the classic power band has been expanded. Powerbands with intermediate loops, so-called maxibands, and very long powerbands, so-called resist bands, have been developed.

Just like the power bands, the maxibands are used for upper, lower and full-body exercises and help to improve strength, endurance and flexibility. Since the length of the band can be adjusted through the intermediate loops, the possibilities with the Maxibands are almost endless.

The Resist Bands are mainly used in athletic training. The resist bands can be used to train speed and explosiveness. Due to their length, they are also suitable for exercises in pairs, which means that they are being used more and more often in classic fitness training.
